Start with the road, the work and the import gate. The badge comes fourth.
African markets do not share one steering side, one age rule or one duty structure. This shortlist connects ten vehicles we currently sell to the jobs they can realistically perform, then shows where an otherwise good vehicle becomes the wrong import.

Corolla for paved city mileage. RAV4 for mixed roads. Land Cruiser or a true 4WD pickup for hard access. A van or MPV when seats earn the revenue. Electric only after charging and battery support are solved.
Seven jobs, seven different first choices
This is the fast filter. A vehicle that wins one row can be a costly mistake in the next.
Do not shortlist a car that cannot be registered
Kenya / RHD East Africa
Steering comes first. KRA's published procedure requires right-hand drive, roadworthiness inspection and a vehicle less than eight years old from first registration. In 2026, use 2019-first-registration or newer as the practical age screen, then confirm with the appointed agent. A China-market LHD listing is not automatically eligible. Read KRA guidance.
Ghana / LHD West Africa
LHD aligns with the normal rule. GRA states right-hand-steering imports are not normally allowed and publishes a duty process based on VIN, model, year and make. Ghana's Customs Act schedule applies overage penalties after ten years, so an older bargain can lose its advantage at clearance. Read GRA guidance.
Nigeria + other LHD markets
Model familiarity is not customs approval. Corolla, Camry, RAV4, CR-V, Land Cruiser and pickups may fit familiar demand patterns, but current age, valuation, emissions, documentation and port charges must be checked locally for the exact VIN before payment. Ask us to quote only after the destination and port are fixed.
South Africa
Treat this as a restricted lane. ITAC requires an import permit for a used passenger vehicle and says the vehicle must not be shipped before the permit is issued; its guidance also says LHD vehicles may not be registered for public-road use. This is not a normal commercial used-car destination. Read ITAC guidance.
Ten vehicles, with the compromise left visible
YIHUI EXPORT sells every linked model below. Stock changes; the listing establishes the model we can discuss, while the exact VIN, steering side, first-registration date and inspection evidence establish whether you should buy it.

Toyota Corolla 2023 1.2T
The low-drama starting point for daily urban mileage
For a private owner, company pool car or app-based driver, the Corolla is the safest first name on this list. The current vehicle is recent enough to clear many age-sensitive conversations, its sedan body is easy to place in dense traffic, and the Toyota badge is already familiar across much of Africa.

Toyota Camry 2022 2.0
More rear-seat comfort without moving into an SUV
Airport transfers, corporate use and long paved-road trips give the Camry a clearer job than stop-start budget taxi work. Compared with the Corolla, it spends more of the purchase and shipping budget on cabin space and road comfort rather than ruggedness.

Toyota RAV4 2024 2.0L CVT
The practical step up when a sedan sits too low
The RAV4 is the shortlist leader for buyers who split time between city streets, highways and maintained earth roads. It offers SUV access and cargo flexibility without the fuel, size and capital commitment of a Land Cruiser. This listed Urban version should still be treated as a road-biased vehicle, not a hard-use 4x4.

Honda CR-V 2021 1.5T 2WD
A family crossover for buyers with Honda support nearby
Where Honda workshops and parts channels are already established, the CR-V deserves a direct comparison with the RAV4. This listing is a turbocharged two-wheel-drive model, so it favors paved family travel and light mixed roads over low-speed pulling or remote-area simplicity.

Toyota Land Cruiser 2017 4.0L
Capability first, fuel and age consequences included
Mining support, lodge transfers, construction supervision and long rural routes are credible Land Cruiser jobs. Its case is not cheap transport; it is the value of a large, known 4x4 platform when the road, load or distance makes a crossover the wrong tool.

GWM Poer 2023 2.0T Diesel 4WD Long Bed
The commercial specification that earns its space
A pickup should be bought for cargo, tools, towing or difficult access. This Poer combines a diesel engine, four-wheel drive and long cargo bed in a recent model year, making it more task-focused than an SUV bought mainly for appearance.

Nissan Navara 2017 2.5L 2WD
Less hardware for buyers who do not need 4WD
The Navara is the counterpoint to the Poer: this listed unit is a gasoline 2WD pickup, better suited to paved delivery, market runs and light cargo than muddy access or heavy field work. Buying the simpler task can free budget, but only when the route truly stays easy.

Wuling Hongguang Plus 2020 1.5L Manual 7-Seater
Seven seats, simple controls, a very specific commercial brief
For staff movement, family trading activity or local shuttle work, the Hongguang Plus uses space more efficiently than a fashionable five-seat SUV. Its manual gasoline layout can be attractive where driver skill and basic mechanical support are easier to secure than hybrid diagnostics.

Toyota Sienna 2021 2.5L Hybrid
Choose the passenger mission, not the SUV image
A Sienna makes more sense than a Land Cruiser when the daily work is moving six or seven people on paved roads. Low-effort access, a long cabin and hybrid operation suit hotels, airports and large families, provided the destination can diagnose and service the hybrid system.

Wuling Hongguang MINIEV 2020 LFP
A narrow urban tool, not a universal Africa answer
The MINIEV becomes rational only in a tightly defined loop: short city trips, private overnight charging, low speeds and a named technician for its electrical system. The listing states a 13.8 kWh LFP battery and 170 km NEDC range, figures that should be discounted for real-world heat, load and battery condition.
Four expensive mistakes a model name cannot fix
Buying a crossover for genuine 4x4 work
A RAV4 or CR-V handles normal mixed roads; neither should inherit a Land Cruiser's job because both are called SUVs. Specify mud, gradient, water, load and recovery access before choosing.
Buying a pickup with no bed requirement
An empty cargo bed adds length and compromises covered luggage. If the daily brief is five people and bags, a crossover usually uses its footprint better.
Buying hybrid or EV savings without support
Lower energy use cannot repay downtime caused by an unavailable charger, incompatible connector, weak battery diagnostics or a component that must cross borders.
Paying before steering and age are cleared
A good vehicle can still be the wrong shipment. Country, port, steering side, first registration and importer eligibility belong on the first message, not the final document check.
Match the energy system to the support network
Petrol
Best default for city sedans, crossovers and moderate annual mileage. Engine size still affects fuel and duty exposure.
Diesel
Useful for loaded pickups and long commercial cycles. Investigate injector, turbo, DPF and fuel-quality requirements before fleet deployment.
Hybrid
Strong on paved stop-start routes when battery cooling, scan tools and trained technicians are available. Battery evidence is part of the purchase.
Battery EV
Only for a measured route with reliable private charging, correct voltage and plug, battery-health proof and high-voltage repair support.
The 12-item evidence request
- VIN and chassis-number photographs
- First-registration date, not model year alone
- Confirmed LHD or RHD steering position
- Cold-start and warm-idle video
- Engine, transmission and full-system diagnostic scan
- Accident, flood and structural repair review
- Cooling system and air-conditioning operation
- Suspension, steering and underbody images
- Tyre age, size, condition and spare wheel
- Hybrid or EV battery-health evidence where applicable
- Destination-specific inspection and export documents
- RoRo or container plan tied to the actual port
Rules checked for this buyer guide
Import rules and tax treatment change. These official sources frame the decision, but the importer and destination agent must confirm the current rule for the exact vehicle before shipment.
Tell us the route before asking for a model
YIHUI EXPORT will match current stock to the destination, steering side, passengers, cargo, road condition and service reality.
Used cars for African markets
What is the best used car to import to Africa from China?
There is no single best car for the continent. For paved urban use, start with a recent Toyota Corolla. For mixed roads, move to a Toyota RAV4. For remote work, evaluate a Land Cruiser or a genuine 4WD pickup. For seven passengers, compare the Wuling Hongguang Plus with the Toyota Sienna. The destination, steering side and import age rule decide before brand preference.
Which used Toyota is the safest all-round choice for African roads?
The RAV4 is the broadest all-rounder when roads are mixed but not extreme. A Corolla is more economical for paved city mileage, while a Land Cruiser is justified only when difficult access, load or remote travel pays for its higher fuel, tyre, tax and shipping burden.
Can a left-hand-drive used car from China be imported into Kenya?
Kenya Revenue Authority guidance says normal imported vehicles must be right-hand drive, less than eight years old from first registration and inspected for roadworthiness. Do not pay for a China-market LHD vehicle for normal Kenyan registration unless a qualified local agent confirms a lawful exception.
Are older Land Cruisers and pickups always better for Africa?
No. An older 4x4 may be mechanically familiar, but age can trigger import rejection, overage penalties, corrosion, worn suspension and higher repair exposure. A newer RAV4 or recent 4WD pickup can be the better business decision when the route does not require heavy-duty hardware.
Should an African fleet buy petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric?
Petrol is the default for ordinary city and family use; diesel fits high-mileage pickups only where fuel quality and emissions service are understood. A hybrid suits paved routes with proper diagnostics. A battery EV should be selected only after charging voltage, plug type, daily distance, battery health and high-voltage support are documented.
What must be inspected before a used vehicle is shipped to Africa?
Verify VIN and first-registration date, steering side, engine and transmission, accident and flood history, cold start, cooling system, suspension, tyres, underbody, diagnostic codes and all destination documents. Hybrid and electric vehicles also need a battery-health report, charging test and confirmation of locally serviceable high-voltage components.
