Inspect the evidence, not the sales description.
Seventy checks turn a walk-around into a documented buying decision. Use the browser checklist during inspection, then keep the downloadable PDF with the VIN-specific evidence pack.
70-Point Used Car Inspection Checklist
Vehicle / VIN / inspector / date: ______________________________________________
The inspected evidence supports acceptance for this item.
Obtain proof, price a repair or make the condition contractual.
Stop the decision until the identity, safety or material defect is resolved.
Four official references behind critical checks
The checklist is a field workflow, not a legal standard. These sources explain why VIN identity, tyre age, OBD readiness and high-voltage condition need separate evidence.
VIN decoding
NHTSA explains the 17-character VIN and provides a public decoder for manufacturer-reported vehicle information.
NHTSA VIN DecoderDate codes and aging
NHTSA states that tyre aging cannot be judged by appearance alone and explains the week/year date code.
NHTSA TireWiseOBD readiness
EPA guidance treats monitor readiness separately from fault-code status, which is why a scan must record both.
EPA OBD guidanceHigh-voltage systems
NHTSA advises that traction batteries require trained personnel and that physical or flood damage can create hazards.

Inspection checklist FAQ
Short answers for the decisions that are often mishandled during a remote purchase.
Is this 70-point checklist a substitute for a professional inspection?
No. It structures the evidence and decision, but lifting, high-voltage work, brake measurement, diagnostics and road testing should be completed by appropriately trained personnel with the correct equipment.
Which checks apply to an electric vehicle?
Use all general checks plus traction-battery SOH or usable capacity, cell and temperature balance, high-voltage enclosure condition, battery DTCs, thermal management and supported AC/DC charging tests.
Does a clear OBD scan prove a used car is healthy?
No. Review stored, pending, permanent and history codes together with readiness, distance since reset, live data and the road test. Recently cleared codes can hide an unresolved condition.
What paint-thickness result proves a panel is original?
There is no universal micrometer value for every material and factory. Build a panel map with the correct meter and compare repeated readings on like-for-like adjacent metal panels; investigate large or irregular differences.
Can an overseas buyer use this checklist remotely?
Yes, if the inspector supplies dated media tied to the exact VIN and stock ID. Require raw scan reports, measurement photos, start-up video, underbody views and a written list of excluded tests.
Should an N/A item count as a pass?
No. N/A means the component is not fitted or the test was not completed. A material uncompleted check should remain a decision risk, not improve the pass total.
