RoRo vs Container Shipping Decision Tool

ROUTE AND CARGO DECISION TOOL

Choose the transport mode after the vehicle and route are known.

The result uses visible scoring. It does not assume that RoRo is always cheaper or that a container is always safer.

Decision first. Freight quote second.

A useful quote needs vehicle condition, dimensions, powertrain, cargo, quantity and destination. Missing route acceptance can override every general comparison.

What each method is good at

These are decision tendencies, not universal promises. Route acceptance, dangerous-goods treatment and terminal rules remain controlling.

    RoRo starts stronger when

    • One standard vehicle is fully operable.
    • A suitable RoRo sailing is confirmed.
    • No loose parts or separate cargo must travel inside.
    • Simple vehicle handling matters more than enclosed protection.

    Container starts stronger when

    • Multiple vehicles can be consolidated.
    • The vehicle is non-running or RoRo acceptance is uncertain.
    • Declared parts or related cargo need a secured plan.
    • Enclosed handling and a documented lashing plan are priorities.
    Wallenius Wilhelmsen passenger-vehicle guidance

Explains that treatment can differ between RoRo and container carriage under the IMDG framework.

    Wallenius Wilhelmsen cargo handling instructions

States that tyres, brakes and related systems must be functional for specified cargo combinations.

Test the route with a current vehicle

Exact dimensions, condition, battery status and loading method must be taken from the selected unit.

    Shipping decision FAQ

Final mode selection belongs in the carrier booking file.

Is RoRo always cheaper than container shipping?

No. RoRo can be efficient for one operable standard vehicle on a supported route, but local charges, sailing frequency, vehicle dimensions and destination services determine the actual comparison.

Can a non-running used car ship by RoRo?

Carrier acceptance varies. A non-running vehicle may require specialist handling and can be rejected from standard RoRo service. The tool therefore points non-running vehicles toward container or carrier-approved specialist handling.

Can spare parts be placed inside a RoRo vehicle?

Carrier and customs rules vary, and loose cargo may not be accepted. A container is generally the stronger starting option when spare parts or separate cargo must travel with the vehicle.

Can an electric car ship by RoRo or container?

Potentially either, subject to carrier, terminal, battery-condition and dangerous-goods requirements. Confirm acceptance for the exact EV, battery status and route before booking.

Is the tool a freight booking confirmation?

No. It creates a transparent shortlist. Final acceptance, method, charges, schedule, documentation and loading plan must be confirmed by the carrier and freight forwarder.

Decision tool reviewed 2026-08-17. It is not a carrier acceptance, dangerous-goods classification, booking confirmation, freight quotation or insurance recommendation. Confirm the exact vehicle and route with the carrier, terminal and forwarder.
