BYD Seagull 305 or 405: Can a Four-Seat City EV Be Your Only Car?
A Seagull is a sensible first shortlist for one to four occupants with reliable charging and mostly city travel. Reject it early if you regularly need five legal seats. Between 305 and 405, buy the extra battery only when it solves a real charging gap; it cannot solve a missing seat or an unsuitable charge connector.
The four-seat test comes before the range test

Count the largest routine trip
Write down driver, partner, children and anyone collected on the way. Our used 305 Dynamic listing specifies four seats. If a fifth person is part of a normal school run or work journey, move to a verified five-seat vehicle before comparing batteries. Never use a shared belt or an unapproved extra seat.

Keep the rear seats upright
Ask for a video loading your approximate stroller, shopping bags or two work cases while all occupied seats remain usable. A boot photograph with folded rear seats does not answer the four-person luggage question. Check child-seat installation and door access on the actual car.

Identify where the car sleeps
Document a usable home, workplace or dependable public charger, not simply a pin on a map. Confirm plug standard, electrical supply, access hours and a second charging option. Require a compatible charging demonstration before shipping.

Choose by your missed-charge day
305: charging is predictable
Start with the 305 when trips are short, you can recharge regularly and a measured route leaves your chosen reserve. Compare the used car's battery, tyres, brakes and delivered quotation with the 405 rather than assuming the smaller pack is automatically the cheaper ownership choice.
405: charging gaps are the problem
Shortlist the 405 when parking or work shifts sometimes prevent charging. More battery can add flexibility, but only after a real route test with air conditioning, load and reserve. If your normal day depends on repeated motorway fast charging, evaluate a larger long-distance EV as well.
For example, three 60 km days before the next reliable charger mean a 180 km trip requirement plus reserve. Neither a 305 nor a 405 catalogue label proves that schedule in winter, heat, at speed or with a degraded battery. Request the measured consumption and usable-energy evidence for the actual unit.
Seagull is not a licence to copy Dolphin Surf specifications
BYD Spain lists Dolphin Surf battery options of 30 and 43.2 kWh, whereas the Seagull reference above lists 30.08 and 38.88 kWh. European Surf range is presented under WLTP, not the CLTC figures used here. Do not advertise a China Seagull as having the Surf's charging equipment, safety specification or overseas warranty without model-specific written confirmation.

Request photographs of the charge inlet, build label, tyre label and approved seating record. Software language, app access and replacement electronics also need checking for your country. Similar appearance is not evidence that regional versions are interchangeable.
Used 305 versus another 405: compare condition separately
Our linked 305 Dynamic is advertised as used; the 405 Flying is a separate listing. Ask each vehicle's current registration status, build date, odometer, storage history and warranty terms. Do not turn this comparison into two assumed identical-condition cars differing only by battery size.
A useful battery file records the diagnostic tool, fault codes, test temperature, start/end state of charge, distance and energy used. Add an underbody/pack inspection and an actual charging session. Reject unsupported claims such as a universal battery-health percentage or guaranteed range. We have not presented a stock-specific battery test in this guide.

Can the Seagull carry five people?
Our linked used 305 is listed as four-seat. Follow the actual approved seating capacity and belts; do not plan a five-person trip in a four-seat vehicle.
Is 405 km a motorway guarantee?
No. It is an advertised CLTC figure in the reference table. Speed, climate, tyres, load and battery condition change actual distance.
Will a simple adapter make any charger work?
Do not assume that. Physical connection, charging protocol, voltage/current limits and equipment approval all matter. Obtain a compatible session demonstration and qualified advice.
Is the 405 always better than a used 305?
No. The larger pack is useful only if condition and charging fit are acceptable. A documented 305 may fit a short daily route better than an unverified 405.
What should I send before asking for a Seagull quote?
