Buying a Used Geely Coolray or Binyue: Identify the Engine, Then Test the Gearbox

Buy the used Coolray whose engine and transmission your local workshop can identify and support, not the one with the most attractive trim name. A 2020 PRO 260T, a 2021 Binyue 1.4T and a newer Binyue L 1.5TD are not one interchangeable parts order. Begin with the build file; a smooth, fully warm road test is the next gate.

Work order 01: establish which car is on the ramp

Ask the seller to photograph the VIN, build plate, engine identification and transmission identification together with the whole vehicle. Match these against the registration record and diagnostic scan. Model year alone is weak evidence: a listing date, production date and first-registration date can differ.

Listing in our store What it currently states What the buyer must establish
2020 PRO 260T Battle 1.5T, engine JLH-3G15TD, three cylinders, 7-speed wet DCT Physical engine/gearbox match, repair history and hot operation
2021 Binyue 1.4T Platinum 1.4T automatic; description uses CVT wording Exact gearbox code. Do not treat that description as verified or copy a 1.5T DCT specification
Binyue L 1.5TD Starshine Newer 1.5TD DCT listing Model year, engine family, transmission code and market equipment

These are seller descriptions, not our inspection results. In particular, the 1.4T transmission remains a confirmation item. We will not replace uncertainty with a guessed six- or seven-speed gearbox.

Why a new Coolray brochure cannot identify an older used one

Geely's current global New Coolray page lists a 1.5TD, 128 kW, 290 N·m and seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. The older official Qatar brochure lists 177 hp and 255 N·m. Those references describe different specification contexts; neither proves every China Binyue uses the same engine calibration, emissions equipment or parts.

Write the actual engine code and gearbox code on the quotation. Ask a parts supplier at the destination to identify filters, ignition parts, mounts, transmission service materials and diagnostic support from those codes. If the supplier can only answer “all Coolrays are the same,” the support check is not complete.

Work order 02: inspect in this sequence

  1. Before anyone starts it

Request a genuinely cold start and a scan before fault codes are cleared. Record stored and pending engine/transmission codes, warning lamps, idle quality, leaks and service records. A clean scan alone does not prove the absence of faults.

  2. After normal road warming

Have a qualified inspector evaluate engagement, low-speed traffic, gentle acceleration and normal upshifts/downshifts. Record temperature and warnings if the diagnostic tool supports them. A short cold parking-lot video misses the conditions that matter to a daily traffic user.

  3. During parking and reversing

Check controlled take-up, reverse engagement and normal manoeuvres on a safe route. Note repeated shudder, delayed engagement, abnormal noise or a warning. Do not deliberately overheat the clutch or hold the car on a slope with accelerator input.

  4. After the drive

Scan again, inspect fresh leaks and compare symptoms with service history. An independent diagnosis should explain an abnormal result before the buyer accepts a discount. “It only does that when hot” is a reason to investigate, not a resolution.

Release the order, hold it, or change the car?

Release for quotation
The identity file matches, cold and warm checks are documented, no unexplained symptoms remain and the local workshop can source the correct parts. Compare condition and delivered cost before choosing between versions.
Hold the deposit
There is an unresolved gearbox description, missing service evidence, a recent code clear without explanation or a seller refusing warm testing. Request the missing record rather than guessing from an online model name.
Choose a different vehicle
Your destination has no realistic service route for the identified engine/transmission, or diagnosis shows a repair risk outside your budget. A different trim badge will not solve that support gap.

The last page of the file is an ownership plan

Before shipment, record the correct maintenance schedule, approved fluids, two working keys, screen language and camera functions. Confirm tyre sizes available locally, basic consumables, body-part sourcing and an independent diagnostic contact. Verify emissions and registration eligibility with the destination authority or appointed agent. These checks are specific to the vehicle, not promises of worldwide warranty coverage.

Our recommendation: for congested daily use, prefer the vehicle with a convincing warm test and documented maintenance over a higher-spec car with only showroom photographs. Use the three listings below to start that comparison; current price, availability and shipping are confirmed through WhatsApp.

Further buying questions

Are Binyue and Coolray enough to identify replacement parts?

No. They are model-family names. Use VIN, engine code, transmission code and destination-market compatibility when ordering parts.

Does a wet DCT guarantee a trouble-free used gearbox?

No. Its condition depends on the actual unit, maintenance and use. Inspect cold and warm operation and investigate fault codes or repeatable symptoms.

Does the 1.4T listing definitely have a CVT?

That wording appears in its current description but has not been independently confirmed here. Require the physical gearbox identification and matching paperwork before ordering.

Should I choose the newer 1.5TD automatically?

No. Compare verified equipment, condition, local parts support and total quotation. A newer model label cannot replace those checks.

Sources and evidence boundaries

Primary manufacturer or official distributor sources are linked beside the relevant facts. Dated publications describe their original model and market; undated model pages were reviewed on 4 September 2026. Our stock descriptions are seller information, not independently verified inspection results.
